A brake actuator (10) includes a tubular housing member (12), a cylindrical housing member (14) connected at one end to a first end of such tubular housing, a device connected to the cylindrical housing for communicating fluid thereto, a piston member (10) mounted for reciprocal movement within such cylindrical housing, a sealing member connected to such piston for sealing it against a surface of such cylindrical housing, a tubular stem portion (40) connected at one end to and extending from a first surface of such piston, a first conical surface (42) disposed on another end of such tubular stem portion (40), a piston return mechanism disposed intermediate a seat carried by such first piston surface and a seat carried by the tubular housing, a flange member (32) connected at one end to another end of the tubular housing (12), a pair of abutment surfaces (34,36) carried by such flange and an externally threaded rod member (28) having a first portion extending inside the tubular housing (12) and such tubular stem portion (40) and a second portion extending outwardly from such tubular housing and through the flange (32), the improvement therewith of a collet style slack adjuster to adjust for wear of braking elements. Such collet style slack adjuster including a power collet member (44) threadedly engaging such threaded rod (28) and a first plurality of elongated and flexible fingers (46) connected to such power collet and positioned around such threaded rod. A second conical surface (43) carried by such power collet (44) matingly engages the first tubular stem portion conical surface (42) for providing a clutch surface. A slack adjuster collet member (48) threadedly engages such threaded rod (28) intermediate the power collet and the second end of such threaded rod. A portion of the slack adjuster collet (48) is disposed between the flange abutment surfaces (34,36) and a second plurality of elongated and flexible fingers (50) are connected to the slack adjuster collet (48) and positioned around such threaded rod (28).
