In an arrangement for adjusting the mesh between toothed gearing members, one of the members is slotted and the divided parts may be elastically drawn together or spread apart by tightening a screw or wedge. As shown in Fig. 1, a toothed segment 2, engaging a worm 1, has a slit 3 in which a conical screw 6 is located. Tightening of the screw 6 causes the tooth base 4 to approach the worm 1. A similar arrangement is provided in a rack 7 which engages a pinion 8, Fig. 3. In another embodiment, a slit 3 divides the tooth base of a segment into two parts which may be adjusted by a cylindrical screw 10. The invention is applied to steering gears for motor vehicles.
