The control device uses one or more sensors (5) providing signals in the event of an accident which are evaluated via a processor to trigger the release of the passenger safety system when the accident is sufficiently serious. The processor uses the sensor signals to calculate an actual value or a series of actual values, with continuous updating of the corresponding triggering threshold value compared with the actual value(s). Pref. the triggering threshold value varies instantaneously with the instantaneous actual value(s).
