The grid structure has interconnected metal straps forming a gp. of rectangular open cells. Two walls of each cell have a pair of spaced horizontal springs (7) projecting into the cell. The other two walls each have an X-shaped spring (8) projecting into the cell and located vertically between the two horizontal projections. The projections grip and retain a fuel rod.
