The power available from, and the efficiency of, internal combustion engines, are improved by cooling the inlet air, by means of an absorption refrigerator, which uses the energy available in the exhaust gas from the engine. The exhaust gas leaves the engine (1) and passes through the exhaust pipe (2), passing through the turbo-compressor (6) and the absorption refrigerator unit (3), before exhausting to atmosphere (4). Air is taken in through the air inlet (5) and the compressor (6). From the compressor it passes through a heat exchanger (7), where it is cooled by the refrigerant, and then into the engine.
