<p>Laminates containing a layer of conductive polyaniline are provided for various uses such as actuator (10) devices. The laminates are controllably deformable and can operate on electromechanical, chemomechanical or mechanoelectrical modes. The actuator (10) is of a "backbone" type construction having opposing layers of conductive material (12, 14), generally a polyaniline salt having outer surfaces (34, 36). The opposing conductive layers (12, 14) are separated by an interposed layer (16) that can be made of various materials, preferably having adhesive properties capable of securely holding inner faces (30, 32) of the respective opposing conductive layers (12, 14) in a set position. The electromechanical operation of actuator (10) can be accomplished by applying a voltage potential across negative (22) and positive (24) contacts through a control means (20).</p> |
