A shaped catalyst or catalyst carrier contains at least one particulate acid-activated layered silicate and a binder. Also claimed is the preparation of these shaped bodies; and use of these bodies for acid-catalysed reactions. The silicate is a natural two- or three-layered silicate. The two-layered silicate is kaolin. The three-layered silicate is smectite, vermiculite, illite or talc. The silicate is chemically or thermally modified. The catalyst contains an activator or promoter substance. The activator/promoter is at least one compound of the alkalis, alkaline earths, or Gps. IB, IIB, IIIA, IIIB, IVA, IVB, VA, VB, VIA, VIB, VIIA, VIIB, VIIIA, VIIIB. The binder is (in)organic or organometallic. The binder is at least one oxide of aluminium or silicon, titanium or their precursors. The binder is of formula Me(OR)n or Me(O-CO-R)n, where Me = metal and R = an organic group. The binder is a natural, semisynthetic or synthetic polymer or their precursors. A clay mineral is mixed with the binder and the mixture shaped into the final bodies. The bodies are heated to less than 40 deg C. Chemical and/or thermal modification and/or activation processes are carried out. The activator and/or promoter materials are added. The thermal process are calcination and/or drying. The activation process is the reduction of the activator and/or promoter material.
