The steering system (1-13) has an elastic section with a spring element and damper element. The ratio of the damping coefficient (C) to the spring rate (K) lies within the range C/K greater than 1/(10 x Pi). The elastic section is a column coupling which is elastically deformed corresponding to the turning of a steering column shaft. The column coupling may consist of a rubber material with a high damping characteristic which fulfils the aforementioned ratio condition.
