The mechanism has an engine (1) to drive wheels (5) and a pump (6), which can supply a fluid motor (10) to drive further wheels (19). A high pressure path (8H) is connected to the outlet (6c) of the pump, and a low pressure path (8L) is connected to the inlet (6b) of the pump. Equipment (9) can connect the high and low pressure paths to both connections (10a, 10b) of the fluid motor, and can reverse the direction of the connections, if the direction of rotation of the wheels (5) is reversed.
