Oblong cross section cans (8) are filled with sliver from a drawing frame (1) using a rotating head coiler (7). A drive arrangement (9, 10) reciprocates the can during filling to ensure optimum use of the can volume. In a separate mode, the same drive means can drive the can further in one direction to effect a full/empty can change over from can store means (12a, 12b, 12c).
