Dissipation of thermal energy, esp. at high temp., comprises using the accumulated heat in an endothermal chemical reaction. The reaction is pref. the synthesis of H2 together with CO by reducing H2O with C, or redn. of H2O with metal (oxide). Appts. for carrying out the process in a structure subject to high thermal stress has pipes (2), passing through the hot zone, which can be filled with reducing agent and supplied with steam. In an aircraft or spacecraft, the pipes are placed in the zones of the exterior cladding subject to frictional heat. The steam generator is in the pipework system.
