In the production of multiple glass sheet glazing units, two hard sheets of glass are supported in spaced vertical face-to-face relation and the edges heated until pliable, a hollow insert is positioned between the heated marginal edges and the heated edge portions progressively brought into engagement with one another to fuse them together to form an edge wall and simultaneously seal the hollow insert in the edge wall to form a pore hole. The two sheets 21, 22 of glass are supported on carriages by suction cups to pass from series of stations at each of which a pair of edges are heated at 55, sealed at 57 and fire polished at 58. The carriages being rotated between each series to seal the next pair of edges. At one of the series, the hollow insert 64 is positioned between the edges at 56 and moved with the edges to the sealing rolls 61 at 57, where the curved sections 63 bring the edges together to form an edge wall 23 in which the insert 64 is embedded. The insert may be cylindrical or have an outer edge flange 66 as in Fig. 15. The inserts 64 are stored in a tube 70 and pressed outwardly by a spring 73 so that the end insert is held in a pair of spring clips 75 united to the open end of the tube 70. In timed relation to and initiated by the passage of a pair of sheets 21, 22, the tube 70 is pivoted downwardly so that the end insert 64 is passed onto a finger 77 and the tube 70 then moving outwardly at right angles to the movement of the sheets and finger 77 and returning to the rest position of Fig. 7. The tube 70 is secured to a body 69 mounted on a base 80 by a pin 79 riding in a sloping slot 78, the body 69 having a series of pins 81 similarly sloping and engaged by a spur gear 82 to give the required movements, the gear 82 being mounted on a shaft 83 and rotated from motor 88 by means of driving gear 87, chain 86 and a gear on shaft 83. The insertion device 68 comprises a body portion 89, from which the finger 77 extends upwardly mounted on the base 92 of the heating unit 55 by a pin 91 riding in a slot 90 and moved substantially horizontally by a gear 96 engaging a series of pins 93 and a pin 95 slightly below the other pins 93 which gives a slight upward movement to the finger 77 and insert 64 at the moment of sealing and just before the finger 77 moves downwardly as the gear 96 rounds the pin 95. The device 68 is moved in timed relation with the pair of sheets 21, 22 from a motor 108 bymeans of a shaft 116, chain 117 and sprocket 118 on shaft 97 of gear 96, the shaft 97 having an extension riding in a slot 98 surrounding the pins 93, 95. The pore hole inserts 64 are preferably made from a nickelcobalt-iron alloy.
