A current supply of compact design with a minimum number of switching and energy storage elements has a first condenser (c1) across the output of a rectifier (db) but in series with a first controlled switch (s1). The load (c) is in series with a second controlled switch (s2) and a second condenser (c2) across the condenser. There is a common control unit (a) for the two switches. There is a controller (b) containing other switches connected across the second condenser for the load voltage. The switching frequencies are chosen so that the envelope of the pulsed voltage across the first condenser is effectively equal to the source voltage wave shape.
