<p>A lightweight back-pack generator set (10) having a spark-ignited engine operating on middle distillate fuels (e.g. JP-5, JP-8 and F-34) has been provided. The generator set (10) includes a back-pack frame (12); an alternator (25); and a spark-ignited combustion engine (20) adapted to operate on a middle distillate fuel. The engine (20) uses a preheater (30) for heating the intake manifold (17) to facilitate start-up operation of the engine (20). The present invention also provides a simple and inexpensive method for converting a spark-ignited gasoline engine (20) to operate on a middle distillate fuel for providing a lightweight engine (20) suitable for driving an alternator (25), a portable generator, or other portable equipment.</p> |
