For the simpler and more economical production of heat insulating mouldings for motor vehicles with internal combustion engines which can be used in particular for the thermal insulation of components conveying exhaust gases in the engine compartment and in the region of the exhaust system, it is proposed that they be made using a hardenable moulding compound comprising a high-temperature-resistant binder, a particulate component constituted of a porous material and a fibrous or needle-shaped reinforcing component.
