The packing is for sealing a housing (2) and a spindle (1) which is pressed axially by a gland (3). Radial compression directly proportional to the sealing pressure is exerted by a pressure-transmitter (7). The distance between the membrane (50) and housing when the compartment (1) is subjected to a vacuum is equal or approximately nil. Sealing elements (5) are provided which consist of at least two rod packing flange segments which can each produce a continuous sealing line inside and out by overlaps. Two double spiral shaped sealing elements with trapezoid cross section consist of a hollow cylinder.
