An absorbent article such as a diaper or incontinence guard has two openings 15, 16 in the top-sheet, one for urine and one for faeces. A piece of flexible material lies transversely across the diaper between the openings, located between the absorbent body and the top-sheet and acts as a barrier to prevent the waste products mixing. The top-sheet is only joined to the diaper at its edges and, after manufacture, elastic threads 10, 11, 24, 25 act to bring the diaper from the flat state of Figure 2 to the relaxed state of Figure 1 where the top-sheet is distanced from the absorbent body. This also causes the flexible material to unfold or rise to form the barrier. The barrier may take varied forms. <IMAGE> |
