The circuit has a contents addressed memory (CAM), followed by a random-access memory (RAM). The contents addressed memory is addressed by the identification information of the header for each information cell, to provide a target address for addressing the read-only memory, to supply switching path information. The virtual path identification (VPI) is associated with a virtual connection identification (VCI), for addressing the contents addressed memory, to provide 2 alternate memory locations for the read-only memory, corresponding to the priority connection path and the alternate connection path.
