A muscarinic receptor antagonist, useful in treating irritable bowel syndrome, of the formula: <IMG> --- (I) or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, wherein R1 is a group of the formula:or <IMG> <IMG> where Z and Z1 are each independently hydrogen, halo or C1-C4 alkyl; is -(CH2)2-, -CH=CH-, -CH2-S-, -CH2-O-, -S- or -O-; Y is a direct link, O or S; R2 and R3 are each independently C1-C4 alkyl or together represent -(CH2)p- where p is 2, 3, 4 or 5; R4 is H or C1-C4 alkyl; m is 1, 2 or 3, with the proviso that when m is 1, Y is a direct link; and R is a group of the formula: <IMG> , <IMG> , <IMG> or <IMG> where either R5 and R6 are certain specified optional substituents, or R5 and R6, when attached to adjacent carbon atoms, together represent a group of the formula -O(CH2)rO-where r is 1, 2 or 3, -O(CH2)2- or -(CH2)3-; R7 is H, C1-C4 alkyl or -CONH2; and R8 is H, C1-C4 alkyl or C1-C4 alkoxy.
