PURPOSE:To make it possible to fusion splice a quartz glass waveguide and a single mode optical fiber with low loss and high strength and to easily execute the integrated fusion splicing of multiple fibers. CONSTITUTION:A waveguide core 4 and a waveguide clad 5 are formed on a quartz glass substrate having a thickness 0.5 to 1.0m and thereafter, the quartz glass substrate is polished to form a thin quartz glass waveguide substrate 3, by which the thickness of the quartz glass waveguide is made nearly equal to the outside diameter of the single mode optical fiber clad 1. The single mode optical fiber core 2 and the waveguide core 2 are butted against each other and thereafter, the fusing part of the quartz glass waveguide and the single mode optical fiber clad 1 is fused in a nearly equal amt. by heating by a CO2 laser or discharge beam, by which the fusing part is welded with the low loss and the high strength. |
