The invention describes a process for manufacturing an electrical conductor by: (a) inserting a copper bar inside a tantalum, titanium or niobium tube, wherein the thickness of the tube is substantially less than the diameter of the copper bar; (b) inserting the tube containing the copper bar inside a copper tube; (c) drawing the product of step (b) until the diameter thereof is reduced and a corresponding three-metal wire is obtained, which has a predetermined diameter, and is composed of an inner copper core coated by a thinner layer of tantalum, titanium or niobium, which layer is in its turn clad by an outer copper layer; and (d) removing the outer copper layer by any suitable method, e.g., by dipping in a suitable copper solvent, which is chemically inert towards the tantalum, titanium or niobium, to obtain a bimetallic wire composed of an inner copper core coated by an outer, thinner layer of tantalum, titanium or niobium. The process overcomes prior art difficulties associated with the softness of, e.g., tantalum in manufacturing such bimetallic electrodes. |
