The prepn. of propylene oxide (PO) and t-butyl alcohol comprises (a) charging to a first isothermal segment of the reactor system a feed mixt. comprising 25-100 wt.% of a recycle stream, propylene and a t-butyl alcohol soln. of t-butyl hydroperoxide and Mo catalyst; (b) converting 50-80 wt.% of the t-butyl hydroperoxide to provide an intermediate reaction mixt.; (c) removing a recycle stream and recycling it to the first isothermal segment; and (d) passing the remainder of the intermediate reaction mixt. through an adiabatic segment of the reactor system and converting an additional 20-40 wt.% of the t-butyl hydroperoxide. |
