PURPOSE:To prevent deterioration of accelerating capability, caused by limiting of the operating speed of a variable valve timing device. CONSTITUTION:The valve timing of an intake valve is controlled by changing the rotational phase of a cam shaft 1 by a variable valve timing device 10. A control circuit 30 sets the valve timing according to the engine speed and respective driving conditions of a load, etc. Moreover, when the valve timing is set, the control circuit 30 sets the valve timing under respective driving conditions within the specific deviation from the optimum valve timing in full loading in the engine speed.
