PURPOSE: To provide a boiling water reactor having the optimum combination of active and passive safety systems. CONSTITUTION: A boiling water reactor includes a safety system for emergency, comprising a primary container vessel 6; a reactor pressure vessel 2 surrounded by the primary container vessel, a nuclear fuel core 4 disposed in the reactor pressure vessel, a suppression pool 8 filled with water, which is disposed inside the primary container vessel and outside the reactor pressure vessel, and an emergency safety system consisting of mutually separate and independent safety devices and consists of at least two segments that can be indicated as a first and a second segments. The first segment is formed by active structural elements 12, 14, 16, 18, and the second segment is formed by passive structural elements 26, 34, 48, 50. By jointly using the active segment and the passive segment, the obtained boiling water reactor accomplishes improvement in reliability of a plant in addition to the on-line maintenance for cooling system for emergency.
