Novel thermoplastic, biodegradable polysaccharide ether-ester derivs. are of formula (I): Polysaccharide-O-R (I); Polysaccharide-O- = the substd. OH gp. of a polymeric saccharide unit; R = monomeric and/or polymeric substit. of structure X, Me or (depending on the substitution degree per saccharide unit with X or Me) H; X = -A-B-A'-; A, A' = linear polyether chains, where A = (-D-O)n; and A' = (-D-O)mH; D = linear aliphatic or linear or branched aromatic chain of 2-11C; n = 0 or more; m = 1 or more; B = -CO-E-CO-O-; E = opt. substd. aromatic or aliphatic hydrocarbyl; ratio of A' to B is 0.1 or more.
