PURPOSE:To obtain an active oxygen eliminating agent composed of an extract of beefsteak plant belonging to the family Perilla and/or its allied species, capable of sufficiently eliminating active oxygen generating in vivo and having high safety. CONSTITUTION:The whole grass, preferably leaf or stalk tip of beefsteak plant belonging to the family Perilla and/or its allied species (e.g. Forma crispa) is extracted with a solvent such as ethanol. The extract is used as it is or a fraction rich in a component having active oxygen eliminating action is used in the form of a preparation. The agent is orally administered at a daily dose of 10-1,000mg of the active oxygen elimination agent for adult in 1 to several divided doses or injected at a dose of 5-500mg. As an alternative, the active oxygen elimination agent can be compounded to a food at a concentration of 0.1-10wt.%. The agent is effective for the amelioration of various diseases relating to active oxygen such as inflammation, senile dementia, ischemic diseases such as myocardial infarction, allergic diseases, hepatopathy, rheumatism, etc., and the aging of body such as skin. |
