The installation comprises two chains 5 with a common drive, guide means 2, 3 and drive means 7, 8 for the chains, and guide means 4 for a crate 9, barrel or similar object which is to be transported in an upright position on the chains. The chains 5 are relatively narrow and are made from plastics material, such as polyacetal, and are guided through guides 2, 3 which are also made from plastics material, such as ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene, or from stainless steel. The guides 2, 3 for the chains 5 are substantially U- shaped, and the guides for the bottom part of the chains can be divided so that there is a gap for removing dirt. <IMAGE>
