The invention describes a tanker which can reliably prevent a spill of the cargo of petroleum from a petroleum-cargo tank section located in the hull of the vessel in the event of damage to or deterioration of an outer plate of the vessel's hull. Two-sided hull structures have been arranged on the opposite sides of each petroleum-cargo tank in the hull of the vessel and a mid-height cover (deck) has been arranged to divide each petroleum-cargo tank into an upper petroleum-cargo tank and a lower petroleum-cargo tank. In order reliably to prevent a spill of the cargo of petroleum in the event of damage to or deterioration of the hull of the vessel owing to running aground, collision or similar damage, the height of the mid-height cover measured from the bottom of the vessel is determined so that the pressure of the cargo of petroleum exerted on an exterior plate of the side wall of the vessel is not greater than the pressure of the sea water. Also described is a tanker of the type for preventing a spill of the cargo of petroleum which includes an access shaft which also acts as a degasser means. <IMAGE>
