The method provides at least two primary charging phases wherein a constant current is supplied to the battery and charging is carried out until a limit voltage value is reached, in each primary phase, except the first, the current being reduced as compared with the preceding phase; and a further or additional charging phase wherein charging is carried out with a constant current for a limited period of time. The limit voltage may be the same for each primary phase and may be a function of battery temperature. The method follows an IIIIa charging procedure in which three constant current phases with stepped charging currents and with a voltage disconnection at 2.3 to 2.4V/cell are followed by a time-controlled additional charging, also with constant current. The charging current I based on the 5-hour rated current I5 of the battery should be 0.4 to 1.0 times I5 in the first phase t1, 0.2 to 0.5 times 15 in the second phase t2, 0.05 to 0.2 time I5 in the third phase t3 and also 0.05 to 0.2 times 15 in the additional-charging phase t4 which may have a duration of 1 to 5 hours. <IMAGE> |
