The handling mechanism has a primary conveyor (1) carrying the sheets to an assembly station. The assembly station has a secondary conveyor (6) adjacent to the end of the primary conveyor to collect the arriving sheets. The secondary conveyor has guides (3,3',4) for the sheets. The secondary conveyor delivers the component sheets to a colinear working area (12). The working area has a support (7) to hold the components during assembly. A counting station (14) is placed above the primary conveyor to record the passing of individual sheets. The sheets can be separated by a mechanism (15) controlled by the counting station. A second separating mechanism (23) is also controlled by the counting station, and is positioned at the beginning of the secondary conveyor.
