The system uses exhaust tubes (21, 22, 23, 24) which are affixed to the outlet ports of the engine cylinder. A catalytic pot (4) is included, and this has truncated conical end pieces arranged at either extremity of a cylindrical body inside which a treatment cartridge is sealed. The cartridge has several channels arranged inside it which each have a coating of catalytic material. At least one pipe (3) is connected between the ports and catalytic pot. This is surrounded by an envelope (8) which forms an annular space that is selectively fed with either exhaust gas or atmospheric air according to the running conditions of the motor. This ensures that the exhaust gas circulating inside the pipe is either heated or cooled.
