The steering column has two column sections (2,3) with parallel axes. The first section (2) is connected to the vehicle steering mechanism and the second (3) with the steering wheel. Each section has a portion of the steering shaft (6,10) which rotates in a portion of the steering column (7,11). The steering shaft portions are joined together by a rotating transmission (16) and the steering column portions are joined by a connector (14,15). The fixing structure (22) has two guide bearings (26) for the first column section and anti-theft rotation locking (35) of the steering shaft in the first column section.. The first column section is angularly displaceable in the fixing structure to allow adjustment of the steering wheel position. The steering shaft portion in the first column section has two telescopic parts (6a,6b). One part (6b) is connected to the steering mechanism and the other is connected to the corresponding portion of the column body (7) which is displaceable in translation to allow steering wheel axial adjustment.
