The process relates to the removal of air from the brake fluid in the hydraulic braking system of motor vehicles. Mixed air and brake fluid is purged through a bleed screw (2) connected to a pipe (1) leading into a reservoir for the ejected mixture of fluid and air. The process consists of detecting the passage of air bubbles through the pipe (1) and the ejection of fluid is stopped after a predetermined time interval in which no bubbles have passed. An optical system may be used on a section of transparent pipe to detect the passage of bubbles.
