The mail opener/sorter consists of multi-cylindrical rollers to take in the envelopes, drive cylinders and roller conveyors to carry each envelope over three cutting units so that if one cut is made across its width and two are made lengthwise. Each cutter unit comprises a housing (1) with a slot (4) for a projecting blade or disc (2), with the housing subjected to a variable vacuum. The cutters are followed by a series of cylinder conveyors which pass the envelopes to a cylinder assembly which separates each envelope from its contents. The cutting blades or discs can vary between 10 and 300 mm in diameter and rotate at up to 60000 rpm. Screws (7) in the cutter unit housing allow the level of the working surface and the height by which the blades project to be adjusted.
