A seismic brake assembly (100) comprises an annular pipe (1) journaled through a gripping block (2) which frictionally engages the pipe (1) about the pipe's outer diameter. The force with which the gripping block (2) frictionally engages the pipe (1) is controlled by a Belleville or spring-loaded washer (9). By securing the gripping block (2) to one point in a structure (11) and securing one end of the pipe (1) to another point in or associated with the same building or structure (11) to be supported, the seismic brake (100) functions as a rigid member of applied lateral stresses less than a design threshold. When the applied lateral forces exceed the design threshold, controlled sliding friction between the pipe (1) and gripping block (2) is experienced, whereupon the building or structural framing returns the seismic brake (100) to its normal position when the seismic activity ceases. By controlling various factors including the diameter of the pipe (1) and the tension with which the gripping block (2) engages the pipe (1), virtually any desired hysteresis loop may be achieved.
