The invention concerns an electrochemical process for the production of metal hydroxides and/or metal oxide hydroxides comprising metal ions and hydroxide ions, plus a device for carrying out the process. The metal hydroxide and/or metal oxide hydroxide is formed in a chamber (K) located on the cathode side of a bipolar membrane, and the necessary hydroxide ions are produced by means of the bipolar membrane, the anion-selective layer of which is located on the anode side. The metal ions are either fed to the chamber (K) in the presence of a metal-ion-complexing agent in the chamber (K) at a pH of > 7 or formed within the chamber (K). The device for carrying out the process has a cylindrical head with two electrodes and extends downwards in the shape of a cone.
