The prodn. of perfluoroalkyl iodides of formula (I: n <= 4) comprises mixing cpds. of formula (I: n > 4) with cpds. of formula (I: n <= 3) and heating the mixt. to 400-500 deg C: X = F or CF3. Also claimed is the use of a mixt. of a cpd. of formula X-(CF2-CF2)m-(CF2-CF2)m-X (II) and a cpd. of formula X-(CF2-CF2)m-H (III) (m = 3-12) as a heat transfer medium.
