2-Formylpropiophenone(8) is obtained by the reaction of propiophenone(7) and methyl or ethyl formate in the presence of a base such as sodium ethoxide or methoxide in alcohol solvent. 2-Diazopropionate(9) is obtained by the reaction of the 2-formyl propionate(8) and diazo rearrangement reagent in the presence of an organic base such as triethylamine, pyridine, diisopropyl ethylamine. 2-Aryl propionic acid in (1), Ar is 6'-methoxy-2'-naphthyl group, p-phenyl-m-fluorophenyl group, m-benzoylphenyl group, p-isobuthylphenyl group or m-phenoxyphenyl group) was prepared by the wolff rearrangement of the diazo compound(9) at 50-100 deg. C for 4-17 hr in the presence of Ag2O catalyst.
