The prodn. of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) comprises: (a) subjecting CH4 to non-catalytic oxidn. with O2 in a tubular reactor in which a CH4/O2 molar ratio of 1-100 is maintained by multiple injections of O2 to produce a mixt. of methanol and CO with a MeOH/CO molar ratio of 1-2; and (b) passing the MeOH/CO mixt. directly to a DMC reactor for reaction with O2.
