The present invention relates to a process for the maintenance of a battery in a mains and battery-operated device in which the accumulator is discharged and charged in cycles in which it is at least almost completely discharged. A system determines how often the device is used and a cycle is started when a predetermined frequency of use is reached when the device is mains-operated, the battery being first completely discharged through a consumer and then recharged. A recount is made of the frequency of use of the device after this discharge/charge cycle.
