An electrosurgical system for minimally invasive surgery operative both in a monopolar or in a bipolar configuration, consisting of: 1) A handpiece having an elongated body, with a proximal end and a distal end, having at its distal end two electrodes, one active, non movable (14), and a second electrode (15b), retractable into the distal end body when in monopolar mode, and protruding from distal end when serving as return electrode in the bipolar mode. 2) An additional return electrode (15a) normally used when in monopolar mode, to be positioned in contact with the patients tissues, which can be connected during bipolar operation in parallel with electrode (15b) thus creating a possible path for astray currents. 3) A movable switchable electrode (12) positioned at the proximal end of the handpiece, which performs the following functions: a) sends a command signal through an appropriate command cable to an associated ESU to switch from one mode of operation to the other, b) causes the sliding electrode (15b) to exit or to retract according to the selected mode of operation, c) makes the necessary electrical commutations to activate the return electrodes needed according to the selected mode of operation. 4) Active lead (19a) between electrode (14) and active output of ESU, 5) return leads (20a) and (20b) to be connected to return electrodes (15a, 15b). 6) A contact pad monitoring circuit (22).
|
