In a current source for arc or plasma welding or cutting,consisting of a mains portion, a rectifier, an inverter and a transformer, the novelty is that the source is divided into a basic unit, with the mains portion (1) and the rectifier (2), and a work unit with the inverter (5) and the transformer (6), the work unit being positionable remotely from the basic unit.
