An optical fiber comprising a core through which light is propagated and clad which covers the core and blocks the light propagated through the core. The optical fiber has a protruded section for inputting/outputting light and has a pointed end formed by tapering. The optical fiber is used as an optical probe for a photon scanning electron microscope which detects evanescent light locally emitted from a region smaller than light wavelength on the surface of a substance. The optical fiber probe is brought near the surface of a substance and detects evanescent light by scattering the evanescent light. An optically-coupled element is constituted by optically coupling the optical fiber with an optical waveguide. In this optically-coupled element, the protruded section of the optical fiber functions as a condensing means which condenses light propagated through the core, and the light condensed by the protruded section is inputted into the optical waveguide.
|
