Prodn. of pure platinum materials reinforced with yttrium oxide

Prodn. of pure Pt materials reinforced with Y2O3 comprises: (a) forming Pt powder of high purity and low grain size of 2-10 mu ; (b) bringing and distributing Y2O3 particles of less than 1 mu into the Pt powder by grinding in a Pt vessel with grinding balls made of Zr-oxide; (c) degassing the ground product under vacuum at more than 10<-3> mbar and raising temp. to at least 1200 deg C for up to 48 hrs. in a Pt capsule; and (d) gas-tight welding the evacuated capsule and hot isostatically pressing at 1350 deg C and 200MPa to blocks, esp. ingots of compact reinforced Pt of 100% density. Also claimed is: (i) prodn. of finely divided Pt powder of high purity for use in the above process; and (ii) prodn. of semi-finished products and sheets made of the reinforced Pt material. In the mfr. of optical glass. The material has high strength and flexibility even at temps. above 800 deg C.
