The test probe (17) is mounted on a probe holder and is movable by an actuation mechanism (24,26) between a test position close to the test object (11) and a raised position further from the test object. The actuation mechanism is dependent on the rotor's (12) revolution rate. The speed of the rotor is varied to activate the raising of the test probe from the test position. The rotor can be mounted on a movable probe holder to allow testing of elongated objects which may have cross-sectional irregularities.
