<p>A particular method of operation avoids problems associated with possible tape jams in a mailing machine which feeds tape from a roll 72 via feed roller 86 and rotary knife 118 to a print drum 50, the tape feed then being reversed and the knife operated to sever the printed tape portion and feed it to an exit via guide 110. The method includes the steps of setting a predetermined time for travel of a length of tape, adding a trail edge margin to assure that the tape is not cut shorter than a minimum length, reversing the tape drive to unblock a sensor for determining a position of a leading edge of the tape from the tape roll, and in the event that the sensor fails to become unblocked, reversing the direction of the tape roll and for a predetermined time and thereafter retrying the exiting procedure. If a tape path sensor remains blocked an attempt is made for retrying the ejection procedure. <IMAGE></p> |
