Alkali washes of petroleum distillates, containing mercaptides, are regenerated and deodorized by oxidizing with sulphur, separating the disulphides formed, and treating the residual liquor with air or other gas comprising free oxygen at 50-120 DEG C. and 0.5-4 atm. pressure to oxidize any remaining organic sulphur compounds and the inorganic sulphur compounds formed. Amines with one or more amino groups, e.g. isopropylamine, may be used as an oxidation promoter for the oxidation with sulphur. The sulphur may be added as a suspension in water, in which a wetting agent, e.g. one based on alkyl phenol polyglycol ether and ethylene oxide may also be present. Steam may be added to the air for the second oxidation. |
