An automatic document conveying device is provided, which is suitable for use with an image forming machine. The conveying device is suitable for feeding a continuous document (84) or a sheet-type document. Conveying means are provided which include a conveyer belt mechanism (34) for passing the continuous document along a transparent plate (8). A pin tractor mechanism (94) is also provided for conveying the continuous document. A document detector (OS2) is provided which detects a portion of one edge of the continuous document outside of its feed holes (90) when conveyed across the transparent plate. Control means are provided for detecting abnormal conveyance of the document and generating a malfunction signal when the continuous document is not detected for a predetermined period of time.
