An imaging element has a support carrying in order (1) a base layer contg. a matting agent with a no. ave. dia. of 0.4 to 1 times the base layer thickness, (2) a spectrally sensitised Ag halide emulsion layer, and (3) a receiving layer contg. physical development nuclei. The nuclei have an ave. dia. less than 6 nm and the no. of nuclei with a dia. larger than 4.5 nm is less than 15% of the total no. of nuclei. No mating agent is present in the receiving or emulsion layers or in any layers opt. present between these layers. Also claimed is a method of making a lithographic printing plate involving imagewise exposing the above element with a high intensity short time scanning exposure and developing with alkaline processing liq. in the presence of developing agent(s) and silver halide solvent(s).
