A receiver/drier (50) for fluid refrigerant having the housing formed of an aluminum header (52) with a centrally disposed outlet port (53) and off-center inlet port (54) welded to an aluminum canister (82). A header sub-assembly is formed with an outlet tube (56) with one attached to the header outlet port (53). A basket (68) with a perforated bottom is filled with desiccant (74) and the open end is attached to the header (52) with the outlet tube (56) ending through an aperture (72) in the bottom of the basket. A layer of filter material (76) is disposed adjacent the perforated bottom of the basket (68), the inner face of the header has plural concentric grooves (60,62,64) interconnecting the inlet port (54) and another layer of filter material (78) disposed adjacent the grooved face of the header (52); and these grooves distribute flow over the filter in the event of contaminant accumulations in the inlet. The basket (68) is attached to the header (52) to complete the header sub-assembly prior to welding of the header to the aluminum canister (82).
